This classification applies to police officers from other states and federal law enforcement officers who do not possess a California P.O.S.T. Academy Certificate.

  • Paid Academy $54.57/hour
  • Salary $113,505

Police Officer – First Step

  • Hourly base pay $65.93/hour
  • Salary pay $137,140

Police Officer- Top Step

  • Hourly base pay $95.83/hour (*Earn up to $103.23/hour)
  • Salary pay $208,493

Minimum Qualifications
  • COVID-19 Mandatory Vaccination policy was discontinued effective January 1, 2024. New applicants are not required to provide proof of vaccination
  • No prior experience or training is required
  • At least 20-1/2 years old at the time of application / Maximum age is 70 years old (mandatory retirement age)
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States under Federal Law
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license authorizing operation of a motor vehicle in the U.S.
  • Must have at least 20/40 corrected vision
  • No felony, domestic violence or misdemeanor assault convictions; cannot currently be on probation or parole
Educational Requirements

There are two educational requirements that need to be met before you apply.

1) High School:

  • You must possess a high school diploma from a high school within the United States or;
  • You must possess a G.E.D. from an equivalency service within the United States.

Note: If you do not have a high school diploma or G.E.D., but you have a 2 year, 4 year, or advanced degree from a United States College or University only, you can use your degree in lieu of the high school requirement. This does not include degrees from other countries, regardless of being translated and evaluated.

2) College:

  • You must have a minimum of 40 semester units or 60 quarter units from an accredited United States College or University. A degree is not necessary.

Note: If you do not have the required college units, you can use any of the following in lieu:

  • An honorable discharge after 4 years of active duty Military service (excluding Reserve time) or;
  • At least 3 years of working as a Police Officer at another California Police agency.

If you have foreign (out of country college education) all of the following must be completed

Before you apply:

  1. You will need to get a G. E. D. from an equivalency service within the United States.
  2. You will need to get your college credits evaluated and translated by one of the approved service vendors listed below. These services have fees associated with them and are your responsibility. We can only accept translated and evaluated transcripts from the following service vendors:

Hiring Process

San Jose Police Department: Police Recruit

Step 1

Submit Application

Review the Minimum Qualifications and the Application Process.

Step 2

Personal History

Designed to identify applicants who do not meet the minimum standards to become a Police Recruit.

Step 3

Written Test: Pellet B or NTN

Candidates must pass a written exam.

Step 4

Physical Agility Test

Candidates must pass a physical agility test.

Step 5

Oral Board Interview

This is a panel interview. Candidates will be asked five to eight questions, not necessarily police-related.

Step 6

Background Investigation

Candidates will complete a Personal History Statement (PHS) packet. Information provided by the applicant must be truthful and accurate. Omission of facts can be grounds for disqualification.

Step 7

Police Academy

Police Recruits are considered a City of San Jose employee while attending the Academy, which is a 32-week program. Recruits are paid the current contract hourly rate while in the Academy.
